Understanding Enneagram Type 8
Welcome to Enneagram Type 8. Individuals of this type are driven by a desire to be strong, self-reliant, and in control of their environment. Eights are bold, direct, and deeply protective of themselves and those they care about. While they often come across as assertive or intense, underneath is a tender heart and a fierce commitment to justice, truth, and loyalty. In this post, we’ll explore some of the basics of what it is to be a Type 8!
This type’s attention naturally goes towards power dynamics—who has power and who doesn’t, and how well it’s being used. They are focused on being strong, so they can stand up for themselves and others. They tend to see the world as a place where “the strong prey on the weak.” They want to be “the strong,” so they can put a stop to others using their power for evil. As a result, 8s are often confident, bold, and action-oriented, with a desire to keep situations under control. However, their drive to cultivate strength can lead them to be overly-assertive, intimidating, and confrontational.
If I was to peer inside the (secretly tender) hearts of 8s, and pick a favorite title based on what I saw there, it would be “The Protector.” They often have a fundamental belief that protecting/empowering others is their primary function. They want to see power used fairly, to promote justice on a grand scale. But I want to also give a shout-out for “The Challenger.” This title really gets at the tone of 8s in real-world daily living. They push back against the environment with all their might, refusing to bend to its will. They are unafraid to challenge the status quo, even if the status quo is enforced by somebody with high authority. 8s are their own highest authority.
My original name for Type 8s is “The Commanding Officer.” For the record, I didn't ideate this name because I think of all 8s as lieutenants and drill sergeants. It’s not about that. I chose this title for 8s because they have the strength/will to take charge of big things, like leading an entire platoon into battle. Above all, I picked this name because the 8s I know are quick to jump on the proverbial grenade in order to protect those they care for. If anybody has earned the term "unshakeable," it's Type 8s--especially the ones who have opened their hearts to Enneagram work! Lots of offensive stereotypes exist about 8s, making them out as insensitive brutes. The 8s in my life tend to defy those stereotypes.

As members of the Body Triad, 8s are concerned with autonomy and control. They develop strength and personal power to protect themselves and others from a world that seems hostile. They generally ascribe to the “law of the jungle”—eat or be eaten. They enjoy people and things that fill them up, and offer satisfaction on an instinctual level. They seek to be fully enveloped in huge challenges and intense experiences.
There are two things keeping 8s from fulfillment. First is the belief that vulnerability and weakness are synonymous concepts, and second is the belief that they must continuously be in action mode. The result is that 8s may find it difficult to show the more tender aspects of themselves, and also have trouble slowing down. Their high-octane lifestyle keeps them “running hot,” so there is an inherent risk of burning out.
In growth, Type 8s learn that true strength includes vulnerability and openness. They begin to trust that they don’t have to be in control to be safe, and that tenderness doesn’t equal weakness. As they soften, their leadership becomes more inclusive, their relationships more intimate, and their presence even more impactful—grounded in courage and compassion.
In relationships, Type 8s are passionate, loyal, and protective. They love fiercely and stand up for the people they care about, often becoming a safe harbor in a chaotic world. Though they may struggle with vulnerability or trust, when they feel emotionally secure, they offer deep strength, presence, and unwavering commitment.
At work, Eights are natural leaders—confident, decisive, and unafraid to challenge the status quo. They value autonomy, efficiency, and truth, and often push teams forward with their bold vision and action-oriented mindset. While they may come off as intimidating or overly controlling, they thrive when they balance strength with collaboration and heart.
