Type 9 Wings: The Referee Vs the Dreamer

Type 9 Wings: The Referee vs. The Dreamer

Type 9s are often known for their easygoing nature, receptivity, and instinct for keeping the peace—but not all 9s hold that harmony the same way. Wings can shape how a Type 9's mediating energy comes across to the people around them. Depending on whether a Type 9 leans toward the influence of Type 8 or Type 1, "The Peacemaker" can take on a very different tone. One wing adds firmness, authority, and a readiness to call out overstepped boundaries, while the other adds idealism, imagination, and a tendency to retreat into daydreams.

For Type 9s, either wing increases access to the instinctive center, intensifying autonomy and control concerns—it becomes a matter of which direction their body center is facing. 8s are the "outward-facing instinctive center," using their power to resist the external world. 1s are the "inward-facing instinctive center," who resist their internal world by "clamping down" on their impulses. So 9s are caught between the inward and outward expressions of the instinctive center. Let's take a closer look at how each of these wings can shape the lived experience of a Type 9.

9w8: THE REFEREE

Riso & Hudson call 9w8 "The Referee." 9s promote cooperation between people with differing agendas. With an 8 wing, the tone of their peacemaking becomes more assertive. The image of a Referee is perfect—9w8s manage conflict between opposing parties with a firm, authoritative hand. They don't hesitate to "call a foul" when boundaries get overstepped.

There's a line between negotiation and argument, and 9w8s try to prevent others from crossing it. When that line is crossed, the 8 wing shows up—these 9s can let their easygoing nature slide into the background if need be. But they want to restore harmony quickly thereafter.

9w1: THE DREAMER

Riso & Hudson call 9w1 "The Dreamer." Here we find the trusting nature and optimism of 9 blended with the high ideals of 1. The yield is somebody with high hopes for a peaceful, loving, better world. Those high hopes can be dashed by the surrounding reality, which moves us into the other meaning of the term "Dreamer."

9s have a tendency to tune out from themselves, and 9w1s commonly use "daydreaming" to achieve this effect. These 9s drift off into imagination to tune out, as opposed to doing it through physical comfort like 9w8. Type 1 is the most "thinking-oriented" of the instinctual types, so 9w1s tend to be more "in their heads" than their 9w8 counterparts.

Whether you resonate more with the firm mediation of the 9w8 or the idealistic imagination of the 9w1, your wing simply colors how your Type 9 energy moves through the world—it doesn't replace your core longing for inner and outer peace. Growth for Type 9s often lies in showing up fully for your own priorities and desires, rather than merging with others' agendas or tuning out to avoid conflict. Let your awareness of your wing serve as a helpful lens—not a label—on your journey toward integration.
