Type 7 Wings: The Entertainer Vs. The Realist

Type 7s are often known for their enthusiasm, spontaneity, and drive toward new experiences—but not all 7s chase that stimulation the same way. Wings can shape how a Type 7's optimism and appetite for adventure come across to the people around them. Depending on whether a Type 7 leans toward the influence of Type 6 or Type 8, "The Enthusiast" can take on a very different tone. One wing adds fear, loyalty, and a clownish willingness to entertain the crowd, while the other adds toughness, aggression, and ruthless pragmatism.

For Type 7s, a 6 wing offers additional access to the thinking center—there's a "double-down effect" regarding security-based concerns. With an 8 wing, safety and security remain core concerns, but with a side dish of concern around autonomy and control. It can be hard to tell that 7s have core concerns around safety and security, given their upbeat and confident demeanor—but a 6 wing brings fear and insecurity closer to the surface.

It's also common for 7s to be quite independent, but a 6 wing increases concern about being part of the team. This is one reason these 7s are entertainers—they like to share their joyous enthusiasm with the team, or the crowd. Their style of entertaining others can be quite clownish. Their willingness to "wing it" (and look silly in the process) distinguishes their style of performance from that of image-conscious 3s.

7w8: THE REALIST

Riso & Hudson call 7w8 "The Realist." There's a tough-mindedness to the search for excitement and stimulation in these 7s. They recognize that the world will try to get in the way of their good time. So they develop an edge of aggression behind their drive to obtain fulfillment. The basic message is, "I'm enjoying myself, and not hurting anybody—so don't you dare try to stop me."

High-powered optimism meets ruthless pragmatism in 7w8. This combination of effects could also be described as a thinking center in hot pursuit of mentally stimulating pleasure, fused together with an instinctive center that demands physical satisfaction. Excessiveness can certainly come into play, as they seek adventures which are both fun and challenging.

Whether you resonate more with the crowd-pleasing spontaneity of the 7w6 or the hard-edged pragmatism of the 7w8, your wing simply colors how your Type 7 energy moves through the world—it doesn't replace your core drive toward stimulation and possibility. Growth for Type 7s often lies in learning to stay present with discomfort rather than escaping into the next exciting thing, trusting that satisfaction can be found here, now, rather than always just ahead. Let your awareness of your wing serve as a helpful lens—not a label—on your journey toward integration.
